Yesterday was quite an exciting day, my first day as a student teacher in 2nd Grade! I was well rested and ready to tackle what the day had in store for me. I had made plans to meet my CT an hour and a half before the students where set to arrive. I put together a few papers and made some last minute copies. |
The first hour the students were in Music and then PE so we didn't get them until closer to 10AM. With that time we went over rules, got backpacks put away and started learning names. I can remember names pretty well, it's just a matter of being able to pronounce them correctly.
We took a recess part of the way through the morning to give everyone a much needed break. After they ran off some energy we had a small snack and worked on coloring folder covers and bookmarks. Before we knew it lunch was here. The students have lunch and then go to recess which gives the teachers time to eat and catch their breath midday.
After lunch my CT and I took time to share our favorite books with the class. He chose 'Enemy Pie' and I chose 'If Anything Ever Goes Wrong At The Zoo'.

The students were given a note to take home to bring in their favorite book. I am not with them Tuesday and Thursday so I will get to see their books tomorrow. They will turn this into a hallway decoration. I'm working on mine now, I can't wait to share!
I am reading the students 'The Year of Billy Miller' by Kevin Henkes as a class read aloud. I picked this one because it the main character, Billy is starting second grade and is nervous. I thought it would be good to have the students be able to connect a text to their life. I also really enjoyed Kevin Henkes's books growing up so I was happy to see he wrote a chapter book that would be perfect to share with my second graders.
At the end of the day I was really happy with how everything went. I felt like my CT and I had a good balance, he really did let me take charge of the reading which I loved. I can't wait to see what other exciting things are in store for me this year. I'm loving second grade already! Stay tuned for more of the
