Race Recap
Leading up to the race last Sunday I felt really good. I was mentally prepped and physically I knew my training was probably as good as it could be. I picked up a few extra hours at work and had lots to do to get ready to go back to school but I was ready to race. Race morning was bright and early. We loaded up and arrived a few mins after 6AM for a 7AM start time. My mom and I were actually right next to each other on the same bike rack which was a first for us. We had a few friends who were also racing. We caught up with them and planned out where to enter and exit transition. One of my friends, Kate, that I've known since we where in middle school was with us, it was going to be her first. I was so excited for her! It was soon time to exit transition and make our way to the beach for the time trial swim start. |
Swim
If there was one area that I was really hoping to see some improvement in it was my swim. I've been swimming much more this summer and I already had two tris this summer under my belt. My mom, our neighbor, Kate and I lined up between 9-10 minutes. They were letting swimmers in 6 at a time every 15 seconds. Fast. Gave everyone a fist bump and in we went!
My strategy was to focus on putting my head down and really gliding with my arms. Kate was speedy. I did my best to stay with her and my time reflected that.
Ran out, told Kate how well that went and went to get ready to hammer out the bike.

Bike
My T1 time was pretty fast. I threw on my sunglasses, helmet, race number, socks and shoes. I'm still getting used to running in clips, so I was just careful not to fall. I'm really bad at mounting, I will definitely be working on that for next summer. I was soon passed by my mom, our neighbor and even Kate at one point. I yelled at my dad, he mounted the GoPro on his bike and got some really cool shots. l took lot a Honey Stinger right when I got on the bike and followed it with some Nuun. I tried to take as much Nuun as I could so I wouldn't need to take anything on the run. This may have been a bad idea as I got a side cramp later on. Balance is key. Wind wasn't bad. Just wished I had a faster bike :(
Run
Changed shoes and grabbed my Garmin and visor and off I went. The run course was pretty flat. No big hills, just gradual climbs. The water they were handing out was pretty bad so I didn't take it. Saw my dad, he looked pretty good and was happy he was beating my brother. My pace wasn't my fastest, but after swimming and biking it was perfectly okay with me. I just had to tell myself to keep running. The weather was perfect. Sun wasn't really out and it wasn't super humid. I saw the chute and sprinted it in. I'm sure it looked awful but I felt awesome!
Look at all those pretty medals!
Final Thoughts
The race was really my last fling before going back to school. Love my mom that she wants to take funny selfies with me. Must have learned that from me.
